FAMILY SUPPORT: Hope Lake with, clockwise from left, mum Caroline Chipperfield and sisters Gemma and Hollie
By Nadia Gilani
A BRAVE girl has shown her strength of spirit by battling cancer for two years.
In September 2009, Hope Lake, five, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia – a cancer of the white blood cells ,most common in children.
Hope, of Hedger Street, Elephant & Castle, is due to finish her intensive hospital treatment in November.
But she will still need to continue chemotherapy at home to stay clear of the disease.
Single mum of three Caroline Chipperfield nominated her brave daughter for an Our Heroes award.
Miss Chipperfield, who is a full-time carer to Hope, said: “Three days after she was diagnosed with the leukaemia she was diagnosed with type one diabetes and last year she had a collapse and was back in hospital again. I just think she’s been so brave throughout all of this.
“It’s a lot for a little person to go through.
“I think she should be recognised for what she’s been through.
“As an adult I never could have done it.”
When asked where she gets her strength from, Hope said: “Mama.”
Hope, who has two older sisters, Gemma 18, and Hollie 14, is taught at home as the risk of catching an infection at school is too high.
Miss Chipperfield said: “Once she finishes her treatment in November she’ll be classed as in partial remission.
“She’ll still need to continue her treatment, though.
“In the past two years she’s lost her hair three times and spent a week in intensive care and yet she still manages to smile and is always trying to make us all laugh.”
The annual Our Heroes Awards culminates in a gala ceremony at the headquarters of award sponsors Shell on November 15.
