Lifesaver: It was nothing special
Tuesday, 26 July 2011

A MAN who saved the life of a grandad who suffered a heart attack and fell into a coma has been nominated for an Our Heroes award.
Terry James, from Greenwich, rushed to the aid of 59-year-old Richard Liew, on April 4.
Mr Liew had collapsed in the street while walking his grand-daughter home from the Grove Park Generation Play Club in Somertrees Avenue, Grove Park.
Mr James, 63, who works at the baby gym, rushed out to help and found Mr Liew had stopped breathing.
He said: “I just went into action. That seems to have astounded quite a few people, but I don’t get it really.
“I did what you have to do. I saw Richard flat on his face.
“He had been bringing his grand-daughter here for a while so we had a bit of a friendship going.
“I felt completely for the guy. There were no signs of life. My first thought was ‘it’s too late’.
“But I said, ‘no you don’t Richard, you’re not going anywhere’ and started CPR.”
When he found no pulse, Mr James stayed calm and compressed Mr Liew’s chest more than 100 times to get his heart going before paramedics arrived.
He said: “It’s usual to panic in a situation like that.
“I was a bit startled at first but I just assessed the situation like they teach you in first aid training and got on with it.”
He has now been nominated for a South London Press Our Heroes Award, which recognises readers’ achievements.
Mr James said he was “taken aback” by the nomination and didn’t understand the fuss.
He said: “Quite frankly it feels a bit too much. I feel a bit taken aback by it and certainly didn’t expect it.
“The biggest reward is that Richard’s still here.
“I did what was needed as fellow human being.”
Mr James received a Lewisham council civic award for making a significant contribution to his neighbourhood for saving Mr Liew’s life.
Our Heroes nominees’ stories will be given to a panel of judges who will choose the award winners.
The campaign ends with a gala ceremony at the South Bank headquarters of sponsors Shell on November 15.
