Headbutt couldn’t stop me in riot role
Friday, 26 August 2011
By John Hugill
Bamidele Bolarinwa, a police community support officer from Lewisham safer neighbourhood team, was attacked in Lewisham High Street on August 8.
The 53-year-old was patrolling the area with a colleague when he saw vandals trying to cause criminal damage near NatWest bank during the disorder across the capital this month.
As he tried to stop the group, a scuffle followed and he was attacked by a 19-year-old man and knocked to the ground.
The dad-of-three said: “Myself and a colleague were walking right near Lewisham Police Station in the high street.
“We were following a group of youths that were were walking towards the train station.
“Suddenly, out of nowhere, one of the men ran at me at top speed and headbutted me.
“I fell down to the ground and injured my knee.
“I saw the man go on and managed to drag myself up and catch him.
“He looked surprised to see me up on my feet and there in front of him.”
Marvin Tohou, from Deptford, admitted assault when he appeared at Greenwich Magistrates’ Court on August 10 and was sentenced to 18 weeks in a young offender institute.
Inspector Dave Blundell, from the borough’s safer transport team, said: “These particular officers, as well as many others, demonstrated courage and bravery in the face of extreme aggression to successfully protect homes and businesses in Lewisham.
This was when PCSO Bolarinwa was subjected to this disgraceful attack.
“Both officers were off for a minimal amount of time, returning to work quickly to continue their support to the borough. I am very proud of these officers and their actions.”
PCSO Bolarinwa has been nominated for the Our Heroes Awards, which highlight the achievements of South Londoners.
Nominees’ stories will be given to a panel of judges next month so that winners can be chosen.
The campaign ends with a gala ceremony at the South Bank headquarters of sponsors Shell on November 15.
