Have you got a local hero?
Welcome to Our Heroes 2011.
Once again we’re asking our readers to nominate heroes from across our South London communities who deserve recognition for their good work.
Our campaign, alongside partner Shell, is now in its 12th year and again we have thousands of pounds worth of cheques to give to Our Heroes.
We’re looking for people who go the extra mile to help others, making a positive difference to those around them.
South London Press editor in chief Hannah Walker said: “This campaign is all about bringing South London together. We’re proud to be South Londoners and this is a real chance to show the very best off.
“It’s tougher than ever for so many local organisations, the lifeblood of our community. And, with so many increasing financial restraints, they are having to become more innovative on shoestring budgets in order to survive.
“We hope people will use this campaign to reward these groups to ensure they continue to thrive.
“But we also want you to look further to help us recognise all the unsung heroes across our neighbourhoods.”
We all know inspirational people. Heroes of all ages are all around us - from the youngest child to the pensioner who has spent decades serving South London.
It may be your nan who gives up all her time caring for the grandkids, or the student who volunteers their time to good works, as well being a star student.
Perhaps there is a community project that could do with some extra cash to further improve its work, a fundraiser who has given a lifeline to charity.
It may be your neighbour who goes out of their way to check you’re okay when the snows come.
Think about someone who may have battled against overwhelming odds and has shown incredible courage, bravery and selflessness.
You may want to celebrate the emergency services who came to your aid in a crisis, your teacher, your doctor, your local police officer or someone who has shown extraordinary courage in a crisis.
We’re celebrating ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things.
The South London Press wants to say a big ‘thank you’ to all of these people.
You give us the names and our prestigious judges will go through the nominations. There will be a special event in November celebrating the winning heroes who will pick up thousands of pounds worth of cash prizes.
Here is your chance to say “thank you”.
To nominate someone, simply fill in the forms below. We will contact your 'hero' and write up a story for publication featuring their achievements. We may also contact you for further information.
Selected stories will be published in the South London Press and sister publications The Mercury and The Post, as well as online over the next few months.
