More primary classes in Lewisham
Monday, 25 January 2010
Lewisham Mayor Sir Steve Bullock
NEW classes will have to be opened in primary schools across a borough to cope with rising demand for places.
Labour-run Lewisham council has blamed the strain on classrooms on the housing slump.
How many new classes are needed will be decided after the deadline for applications for places in the next school year at the end of January.
The council has already faced increased demand, opening eight new classes at the beginning of this school year.
Lewisham Mayor Sir Steve Bullock said: “The main reason for the extra demand is the housing market.
“People who are living in properties in Lewisham who had every intention of moving are now stuck and need to find school places here.”
The news follows a Government decision to grant neighbouring Southwark and Lambeth £21million in December to help them deal with their shortage of places.
Lambeth is looking to build a new school alongside extensions to existing buildings, while Southwark will add classes to current schools.
Lewisham council’s plans were discussed at a children and young people select committee meeting on Tuesday.
