Caffy St Luce
By Lindsay Burns
IT’S no wonder this 2009 Our Heroes nominee has been nicknamed “Miss Lewisham”.
Although she would never admit it, band manager and music promoter Caffy St Luce is the driving force behind many of the arts events in the borough.
Caffy has been nominated as a Community Campaigner for her work organising and promoting dance, theatre, music and art events to create some of London’s wackiest and most vibrant festivals.
Founder of Rocklands Management and a member of arts collective the Music Tourist Board, Caffy is currently planning an Arts and Music Olympics for 2012 and an independent carnival called Today Deptford.
With a shoestring budget, the week-long Today Deptford event will start on July 4.
It was thought up a few months ago after Lewisham council cancelled its backing of the long-running Made in Deptford festival.
Caffy, who also campaigns for better facilities in Lewisham, said: “There’s so much talent in the area and as many opportunities to perform as the West End.
“We’re just a collective of skint people with no sense of limit and some romantic daydreams.
“We approach it from the angle of romance and it seems to work – like in Wayne’s World.”
Caffy described her abilities to bring artists together as “just yakking”.
But those who work with her think her infectious enthusiasm has helped create an area where venues unite to promote artists.
Her friend Tristan Scutt runs Kate and Tristan, a “music-inspired fashion boutique” in Clifton Rise, New Cross.
He said: “I have never met anyone who loves Lewisham so much.
“In my eyes Caffy is the unpaid creative, community and music PR consultant for Lewisham.
“When any new artist, musician, writer, poet, MC or DJ comes to Lewisham to network with the existing creatives, the conversation always starts with, ‘Have you met Caffy?’
“Known by everyone, loved by all who meet her, Caffy is the true diamond of the area.
“There would be a lot of happy people in Lewisham if she won a Heroes award.”
