AWOL soldier at Lewisham anti-war meeting

Monday, 14 September 2009

A SOLDIER who refused to fight in Afghanistan appeared at an anti-war meeting.

Lance Corporal Joe Glenton went absent without leave while on leave from service in the Middle East two years ago.

He appeared at a Lewisham Stop the War Coalition meeting at Lewisham Methodist Church in Albion Way, on Tuesday.

The group’s chairman, Stewart Halsorty, said: “It was fantastic to see Joe and his wife Claire turn up to the meeting and give their support to us.

“Joe is not allowed to speak at the moment but his wife spoke about the appalling situation in Afghanistan at the moment.

“She spoke about how the situation over there has not got any better since the war started and rebuilding projects there haven’t even got started.

"He disagreed with the war and thought it was morally wrong.”

Mr Glenton, 27, from York, joined the Army in 2004 but went AWOL in 2007 after serving with the Royal Logistic Corps in Afghanistan.

He reappeared after more than two years’ absence, during which he went to south-east Asia and Australia.

He is currently facing a court martial for desertion.
