Gay-hate crime rises across South London
Monday, 26 October 2009
Figures show there has been a rise in homophobic crime
homophobic crime has risen across South London, with one borough suffering an increase of more than 50 per cent.
Met figures show the number of gay-hate crimes in Southwark rose 58 per cent in the 12 months from September 2008 compared with the same period a year earlier.
The number of reported crimes jumped from 45 to 71 - an average of almost six a month.
A rise of 29 per cent was reported in Wandsworth and 15 per cent in Lewisham.
Lambeth had the lowest rise in hate crime with an increase of three per cent.
Ben Summerskill, chief executive of gay rights campaigners Stonewall, said: “The Met has made progress in the past decade but is patting itself on the back and becoming complacent.”
